Instructions: Please use these prompts to help you consider what might need to be added to the current list of Horizon Topics. Add your thoughts as bullet points below, using a new bullet point for each new technology or topic. Please add your comments to previous entries if you agree or disagree.

The Horizon Project research team will investigate each nomination entered here to see if it meets the criteria set for new topics (eg., that the topic represents a "real" technology, as opposed to a concept, a new idea, or a proposal; that it is sufficiently developed that research, projects, and information about it exist; and that it has a demonstrable link, or strong potential link, to education).

On one hand, this is the only scalable way to provide feedback to non-quiz activities in massive learning communities.   • Practice-oriented Massive Online and Open Courses (pMOOC) MOOCs are currently being developed in all kind of disciplines, from Sociology, to Mathematics or Engineering. As a support to the practice-oriented learning experience, the computer science MOOCs usually provide programming environments where students can practice what they learnt in the theory. However, although the use of remote laboratories is becoming more usual everyday in traditional online engineering education, engineering MOOCs are lacking of providing tools to experiment with real equipment. The benefits of electronics laboratory practices are widely known for professionals and necessary for any person who seeks for a broad comprehension of the real-time performance beyond the ideal modelling. Therefore, when designing any electronics course, the laboratory practices are one of the pillars on which the learning is established. Current MOOCs do not include remote laboratories mainly because of its massive component. As remote laboratories are physical objects cannot be scaled easily to provide service to thousand of students, from around the world and with different time zones, in a course. Thus, a significant challenge exists in developing courses where experimentation plays an important role. One of the major challenges is the provision of laboratory work online along with the theoretical contents.   • Immersive Learning Environments /Simulations (added by - Larry Larry Sep 3, 2013) a more general term rather than virtual worlds and would fit better for stem learning and training; it is also suggested to add virtual reality / mixed reality (includes Google Glass - Christian.Guetl Christian.Guetl Aug 25, 2013 -- I would argue that this term refers to simulations in which the student is "immersed" in an experience. Virtual Worlds could be part of this, but I think simulations are the more interesting dimension. I can't see Google Glass in here at all. - Larry Larry Sep 3, 2013 [Ed -- while these very different topics could be combined, our approach is keep things as distinct as possible. There is enough difference between Google Glass (an Augmented Reality device in some ways, a new kind of interface in others) and both simulations and virtual worlds that it is best to keep them separate, and simply add this new topic to the master list.]
  • Design Thinking. The next generation will need to be more and more comfortable with problems of dizzying complexity. And design thinking can teach them that.   • Cloud based services and resources. Move from the term "cloud computing" to "cloud services and resources." This will impact directly into the educational field: The cloud-based services are constantly evolving, many of the so called cloud services, traditionally known as Web 2.0 services because of their innovative features, have added an important element into the cloud landscape, which is interoperability features, opening their API’s to allow consumers to use their services in creative and innovative ways. This opens the possibility to create orchestrated services that provides learning experiences that were not possible before. This also changes the paradigm from a monolithic architectural approach of education environments to a flexible, distributed and heterogeneous architectural setting for education environments, which is the aim of cloud education (learning and teaching) environments. This also maximizes innovation possibilities, allowing interoperability of the best and most appropriate cloud services based on learning needs, freeing up from a vendor specific approaches and limits, transforming the cloud education environment into a digital educational ecosystem of services and resources available for the practitioners, in contrast to a large amount of software services that are difficult to manage and organize for a learning setting.
